Tilbury 4 (3) - (1) 1 ROMFORD Attendance 201 - Chadfields
By Gary Redwin
Despite a good start, Romford could not recover from conceding three goals in nine minutes shortly before half time as they fell to another defeat.
Back in September Tilbury had been in the relegation zone, but since then a change in management and some new signings had seen them climb the table. They also included in their starting line up ex-Boro men Ryan Boswell and Kris Newby. In contrast Romford's good early season results now seem a distant memory as their bad run continues, but for most of the first half they were the better team with Nick REYNOLDS twice and Roddy Lemba going close. However the defensive frailties continue and after 29 minutes Tilbury's first attack of real note resulted in a low right wing cross finding Ollie Spooner unmarked in the box with time to place his shot past Harry ALDRIDGE. But the lead was to last for only 3 minutes as Reece HEWITT's left wing corner took a slight touch off a defender's head and straight into the path of the onrushing Danny COSSINGTON who powered his header home.
Under the circumstances Romford would have been happy to go into the break level pegging, but they conceded again after 37 minutes as a long ball was collected by Lewis Smith, who was unmarked on the left of the box and he quickly swivelled and hit his shot home in one movement. And the goal rush continued a minute later when the third member of Tilbury's formidable strike force, George Sykes went on a powerful run down the left and cut inside to score past the stunned Boro defence. Even then there was still time for both teams to nearly score again before half time with Ayo OLUKOGA forcing Tilbury keeper Rhys Madden into a good save and Cossington blocking a shot on the line.
The second half began, with this time the home side making the early running and Aldridge kept Romford in the game on a couple of occasions, but they were then thrown a lifeline on 55 minutes as Madden came out and clumsily floored Malaki TOUSSAINT in the box when there seemed to be little danger. Roddy Lemba stepped up for the penalty but his low shot lacked power and allowed Madden to redeem himself. For the rest of the game Boro enjoyed plenty of possession and fashioned some decent chances but in truth it was Tilbury who looked more likely to increase their lead and although Aldridge denied them on a number of occasions he was unable to stop Smith bagging his second goal with a good run and finish after 74 minutes. Toussaint and Kurt SMITH tested Madden with good efforts towards the end but defeat for Romford now leaves them only just clear of the two relegation spots.
