Despite creating the better chances in the first half Romford could only go in level at half time against a team who rarely looked like a club battling for promotion. Harry Daly went close early on, when an in-swinging corner nearly sneaked in at the near post before Daly became the provider when his free kick was flicked on by Chris Taylor, but the striker's header fizzed just wide. Left back Hugo Atkinson had to be replaced due to an injury, by James Ishmail just before Canvey had their first chance but Boro keeper James May easily saved the long range effort. For Boro, debutant forward Luke Hornsley could only direct his header straight at the keeper and Jonathan Nzengo's shot was easily saved.
Romford continued to push forward in the second half and Taylor was millimetres away from turning in Daly's shot that had been deflected and sailed just wide of the post. After sixty four minutes Canvey took the lead out of nowhere when an aimless clearance forward ended up being the best pass of the match. The ball managed to squeeze through a tiny gap in the Boro defence leaving Mitchell Gilbey a chance to score and the striker made no mistake, rounding May to put the ball into the empty net. With Romford piling on the pressure only a few last ditch challenges stopped them getting back in the game before the match was settled five minutes before time. After a Romford attack broke down the ball was cleared and George Sykes beat his man down the left and cut in, before dribbling past May and firing home to complete an excellent solo goal.
Defeat leaves Romford just two points above bottom club Cheshunt, following their 2-1 win at Bury Town as Boro prepare for the midweek visit of top of the table Hornchurch.
