Late goals see off nine-man Hamlets

Romford (0) 3, SOUL Tower Hamlets (0) 0 – Saturday 3rd October 2026 – Essex Senior League

On the face of it, three points, three goals scored and a clean sheet sounds like a satisfactory and comfortable victory: Satisfactory it certainly was, but comfortable not so much as it wasn't until the visitors had been reduced to nine men that Boro got their noses in front.

Inevitably, a major talking point will be the red cards that hampered Tower Hamlets' efforts to get anything out of the game, but neither could be disputed. The first came after 21 minutes when Kieran James was dispossessed by Jack Zielinski on the edge of his own penalty area and brought down the Romford striker as he tried to recover the ball. Hamlets made an immediate substitution to shore up their defence with Miles Mitchell-Nelson replacing Elton Tettey. The free-kick resulting from James’s foul came to nothing.

Hamlets’ second red card proved more significant. Dion Lewis-Kirwan had already been cautioned when he handled the ball to prevent a Boro goal and concede a penalty in the 66th minute, received a second yellow card and his marching orders. Brown converted the penalty to put Boro ahead.

James’s red card apart, the first half was light on significant action. In the 10th minute Kian Cocking’s shot was beaten out by Hamlets keeper William Betts and on the break, the visitors created a chance for Shomari Barnwell, whose shot on the turn was gathered by Lamar Johnson. Hamlets came close to a goal in the 13th minute when Samir Bihmoutine hit Johnson’s left-hand post with a shot from outside the box.

Boro had a chance as the game entered stoppage time at the end of the first period. Brown and Cocking combined well on the right, but when the ball was set up for Alfie Osborne, his shot from 20 yards proved to be a comfortable gather for Betts.

Chances proved to be similarly thin on the ground after the interval. Johnson blocked a shot at the expense of a corner after 52 minutes and with 54 minutes played Aron Gordon delivered a dangerous corner that Brown flicked on but straight at Betts.

Prince Sikiru – who had replaced Freddy Tandon at half-time – shot across goal after 61 minutes before Romford finally made the breakthrough after 66 minutes. Gordon released Brown on the left and when the Boro forward got to the by-line, his cut-back was diverted towards goal by Jack Zielinski with Dion Lewis-Kirwan preventing a score with his hand. Brown stepped up to convert the penalty and finally put Boro ahead.

Tower Hamlets were in damage limitation mode at this stage, and although they forced a few corners, rarely looked like scoring and Boro went on to make it 2-0 after 70 minutes. Zielinski marked his debut with the goal as Ben Sargent fed Matt Blake on the right and his cut-back found the former Harlow Town striker in space and with time to place a shot past Betts.

Boro wrapped the game up with a third goal after 89 minutes. From a corner from the left the ball found its way to Cocking; he delivered a pass to Blake lurking on the edge of the penalty area, and the substitute rounded off the afternoon’s scoring with his second goal in Romford colours.

The win pushes Boro up to 12th in the table, but with as many as three games in hand on sides above them in the table.

Romford: Lamar Johnson, Ben Sargent, Teddy Desmond (Julius Nwike 90+1'), Alfie Osborne, Jake Barlow, Freddy Tandon (Prince Sikiru 46'), Aron Gordon (Matt Blake 67'), Callum Burkey, Jack Zielinski (Ekow Owusu-Boakye 90+1'), Jaxon Brown (Kelson McFarlane 87'), Kian Cocking.
