Sungate (1) 2, Romford (0) 3 - Pre-season Friendly - Saturday 13th July 2024
A Boro team largely comprising trialists beat Olympian League side Sungate at Seven Kings on Saturday lunchtime thanks to a goal with what turned out to be the last kick of the game.
Romford had the first chance with a shot that hit a post in the 14th minute and shortly afterwards forced the Sungate keeper into a save at his near post, but the home side took the lead after 33 minutes when the Boro defence failed to deal with a long through ball, giving the Sungate forward the chance to round Wayne Baker and fire into the net. Boro responded with a fierce shot that hit the bar, but trailed 1-0 at the interval.
Romford deservedly equalised after 64 minutes when a through ball was met with a good effort that the Sungate keeper blocked only for the loose ball to be converted. With 72 minutes played, Sungate regained the lead after a quick break created the opportunity for a forward to score with a low shot.
Boro scored a second equaliser after 80 minutes with a well placed low shot that found the corner of the net and clinched the win in the last minute when possession was won on the edge of the Sungate penalty area and a fierce drive was dispatched past the despairing dive of the Sungate goalkeeper.
