Friday trip to face league leaders

Boro make the short trip to Ashtons tomorrow evening to play a Woodford Town side who have, once again, made a strong start to the season.

Having won their first four league games, Woodford made it five in a row on Wednesday evening when they came away from White Ensign with all three points from a 2-0 victory. That was their fourth win on the road as to date, Woodford have played just one home league game, in which they beat Sporting Bengal United.

As well as a 100% league record, Woodford have made good progress in the FA Cup. Having beaten London Colney and Harlow Town in the Preliminary Rounds, they travelled to Newmarket Town last Saturday and won 3-2 to set up a trip to Bury Town. They were less successful in the FA Vase however, losing 1-0 to Step 6 side Lymore Gardens in the First Qualifying Round.

Having made an indifferent start to the season, Romford are unbeaten in the last three, albeit only one of those games was a league game. After a 3-1 win at Clapton CFC in the BBC Essex Senior Cup and a 2-2 draw at home to Athletic Newham in the league, Boro were 5-3 winners in a friendly at Heybridge Swifts. Two Boro goals were scored by trialist Kevin Musimami, who has subsequently signed for the club.

Previous Meetings:

Woodford Town’s history has been a somewhat convoluted one, one that has seen them reform after folding in 2003 in a number of different guises, so it might be best to divide Boro’s record against them into two. Against the club that folded in 2003, Boro have a record of three wins and a draw in four Essex Senior League games, while since 2007 there have been ten games with Boro winning four, drawing three, and losing three. Four of those games were played between 2007 and 2009 when our opponents were known as Mauritius Sports & Pennant.

Most memorable of these was the first fixture, played at Mayesbrook Park in October 2022 in which the visitors ran up a 3-0 lead by the 40th minute only for Boro to stage a comeback after the interval and earn a 3-3 draw with Jake Gordon snatching the equaliser in stoppage time. There was a stoppage time goal in the fixture at Ashtons between the sides last season too, but unfortunately it went Woodford’s way and proved to be the only goal of the league game played at Ashtons Playing Fields in January. In the return, Woodford won 3-0 at Mayesbrook Park.

Last Season:

Having finished runners-up in the Essex Senior League and subsequently losing in the Play-Off Semi-Final against Sporting Bengal United in 2023-24, Woodford finished third in the table last season to once again have a shot at promotion through the Play-Offs. Having beaten Great Wakering Rovers in the Semi-Final, The Woods once more missed out on a place at Step 4 when they were beaten at Takeley in the Final.

Woodford didn’t make any progress in either the FA Cup or FA Vase last season, falling at the first hurdle against Benfleet and Hadleigh United respectively.

Home Ground and How to Get There:

Woodford Town’s home ground at Ashton Playing Fields, Chigwell Road, Woodford is about 8 miles from Romford. The Post Code for Sat Navs is IG8 8AA and there is ample car parking at the ground

By public transport, the 275 bus from Fulwell Cross to Walthamstow stops opposite the ground. The nearest station is Woodford on the Central Line from where the ground is a 15 minute walk.

With Ashtons being an athletics stadium, the pitch is some distance from the spectator facilities, as you can see from the aerial photo below.
