Welling Town v Romford Preview

Michael Woods3 Jul - 07:40

Second friendly is tomorrow evening

After a 2-0 defeat in the first pre-season friendly at Wormley Rovers on Tuesday, Boro make a trip south of the river tomorrow night to take on Southern Counties East League Division One side Welling Town, who played their first friendly last night (Wednesday),and in which they were beaten 4-1 by Erith & Belvedere.

Although Welling play their home league games at the Erith Leisure Centre, tomorrow’s game is being played at Danson Sports ground – see below for address and directions.

Welling Town – Brief History

Formed in 2014 as a Sunday league team, Welling Town joined Division One of the Southern Counties East League for the 2018–19 season and were champions, however, after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 2023–24, they were relegated back to Division One. Last season they finished 17th in the table with only Meridian VP below them.

The club’s nickname is The Boots (Wellington, geddit?) despite their badge featuring crossed pistols. They play in green and black.

Prior to moving to the Erith Leisure Centre, The Boots played at Bayliss Avenue (former home of Thamesmead Town, Kent Football United's Efes Stadium in Dartford, Chatham Town's Bauvill Stadium, and the Mayplace Ground of Phoenix Sports before starting the 2024–25 season at the Erith Leisure Centre.

Venue Details and How to Get There:

Tomorrow’s game will be played at Danson Sports, Perry Street, Crayford, DA1 4RB on a 4G surface. By road from Romford the simplest way is over the Queen Elizabeth Bridge, taking the exit for the A206. Optimistically, Google Maps say that the trip should take 40 minutes, but depending on traffic, an hour seems more realistic.

There are three railway stations in the area, Slade Green, Barnehurst, and Crayford which are about 1.7 miles, 1.3 miles, and 1.2 miles away, respectively.

Welling advise that they won’t have access to the pitch until 7.30pm, and kick off will need to be at 8.05pm to allow the previous booking to withdraw.

Admission is FREE

Boro’s next game after tomorrow is on Tuesday 8th July, away to East Thurrock CFC.
