After three away pre-season games, Boro are back at Mayesbrook Park for a friendly against Isthmian League North side Witham Town tomorrow.
While Boro have won one and lost two of the pre-season games played so far after picking up a win at East Thurrock Community FC on Tuesday, Witham have played twice, losing 1-0 to Essex Senior League new boys SOUL Tower Hamlets, but having beaten Sawbridgeworth Town 3-2.
Witham are about to embark on their fourteenth season in the Isthmian League since their promotion from the Essex Senior League in 2012. All bar one of those seasons have been spent in the North division – they had one season in the Premier Division in 2014-15. Last season they finished seventh in the table, seven points off the Play-Off places, having been in contention for a top five finish for some time in the early stages of the campaign.
Previous Meetings:
Romford’s last encounter with Witham was on the final Saturday of the 2021-22 season when the sides met at Mayesbrook Park. Boro were already relegated, but Witham needed a win that would give them a chance of staying in the Isthmian League through the Inter Division Play-Offs. Despite Boro scoring twice in a league for the first time since the previous October, and despite the scores being level five minutes into stoppage time, Witham bagged a late, late winner to sneak a 3-2 victory. They then went on to retain their Isthmian League place with a 3-0 win over Saffron Walden Town in the Play-Off. Boro’s goals that day were both scored by L’heureux Menga.

Overall, Romford have met Witham Town twenty-two times since 1992, winning seven and losing nine. In Boro’s last Isthmian League season, two goals from Christian Adu Gyamfi earned a 2-0 win at Spa Road.
One of the most memorable games between the teams was also at Spa Road, in 2015. On a very windy day at the tail end of Storm Barney (which had been responsible for the memorable own goal at Thurrock), Witham raced into a 3-0 half-time lead. With the wind at Boro’s backs, George Tubey got one back, Lee Weemes got another, and then in stoppage time, Jake Giddings fired home to make it 3-3.
