Romford play their second consecutive home game at Aveley FC’s Parkside ground when Witham Town come visiting tomorrow evening, and Boro will be hoping to pick up all three points to start reducing the gap with the sides above.
It seems an absolute eternity ago, but it was in mid-September that the two sides met, at Witham when Romford earned their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw, with Nathan Tabora the Boro scorer.
Witham have not been having the best of seasons and are currently 16th in the table with 22 points from 23 games, having picked up just three points in their last six games. Those points came in a 1-0 home win over Grays Athletic, however the other five matches have ended in defeat with the most recent coming last Saturday, when they were beaten at home by Great Wakering Rovers, who scored the only goal of the game.
Last season’s visit of Witham Town proved to be a crucial match for Boro, who trailed Witham by nine points at the start of the day. Goals from Danny Nesbitt, Ayo Olukoga, and George Woodward secured a 3-1 win that began a five-game unbeaten run that ended with Romford level on points with Witham, and contributed significantly in Boro earning a reprieve from relegation. Alan Blackholly's picture shows Woodward heading Boro's third goal from a free-kick by John Maskell (centre of picture).
Danny Nesbitt is one of three ex-Romford men who have appeared for Witham Town this season; Chris Taylor and Reece Hewitt (who signed recently from Basildon United) are the others, although only Hewitt played on Saturday against Great Wakering Rovers.
In fifteen league games between the clubs, Witham have the better record, but only just, with Romford winning 4 games, Witham 6 and with 5 drawn.
Last week’s home game at Parkside against Hullbridge Sports resulted in a disappointing defeat, but the attendance of 166 was encouraging, and there were plenty of Boro faces in evidence on Saturday for the 0-0 draw with Grays. Now more than ever the team need the fans behind them, so let’s get as many people to Parkside tomorrow night to cheer them on.
