Romford wrap up the pre-season programme on Tuesday evening when West Ham United’s Development side visit Mayesbrook Park, which gives Boro fans a final opportunity to see Derek Duncan and Mark Holloway’s squad in action before the serious stuff starts at Harpenden Town on Saturday.
The only previous meeting between the two clubs came in 1996 when West Ham sent a team to Sungate for a pre-season friendly which Boro won 4-2. Romford’s goals that evening were scored by Carl Williams, Danny Benstock, Lee Fulling, and an own goal. The crowd was 837, and how nice it would be to see that many at the game on Tuesday!
Prior to 1978 the most notable fixture between the clubs was the testimonial match for Dave Bickles and Robin Chandler that was played at Brooklands in November 1975 when a crowd of over 4,000 saw The Hammers parade the FA Cup that they had won at Wembley in the previous May. Jimmy Greaves guested for Romford, but it was Robin Chandler and Bernie Lewis who scored for Boro in a 2-2 draw.
During the years that Romford ran a reserve side in the Metropolitan League, West Ham’s ‘A’ team were regular opponents and their team included such well-known names as Clyde Best, Johnny Ayris, and Clive Charles. Our visitors’ side on Tuesday could well include some players who will go on to be household names!
Admission prices for Tuesday’s game are:

Concessions (Over 65): £3
Junior (Under 16): £1
