Weather holds key to pre-Christmas clash

Weather permitting, Romford face landlords Brentwood Town at The Arena tomorrow, and will be looking to build on the win gained at Felixstowe & Walton United two weeks ago.

Brentwood are one of three sides who sit four points above Romford (Felixstowe & Walton United and Basildon United are the other two), so even a Romford win tomorrow would not be enough to lift Boro off the bottom of the table, but would definitely narrow the gap as neither of the other sides in the bottom four play tomorrow.

Romford met Brentwood Town earlier in the season in a Velocity Trophy game at The Arena, with Boro the home side on that occasion too. The accompanying picture shows George Woodward taking a shot at goal during that game. That evening, goals from Luke McLeavy and Temi Babalola (who bagged two), gave Boro a 3-1 win. Babalola – who scored six goals in his short spell with Romford – left to join our landlords just a week after our meeting, and has hit the target once for his new club, against Hornchurch in an Essex Senior Cup tie. Another former Boro man now with Brentwood is Khadean Campbell, who joined The Blues during the summer.

Brentwood’s recent form is identical to Romford’s – one win and one draw in the last six – with Brentwood’s win coming at home against Soham Town Rangers, and the draw coming at Felixstowe where they drew 3-3 after trailing 3-0. In their most recent league game, at home to Hullbridge Sports, Brentwood led 3-0 at the interval, but in a match significantly affected by strong winds and heavy rain, the visitors ran in four second half goals to win by the odd goal in seven.

Since then it seems to have rained non-stop and Romford’s home game against Hullbridge Sports on 14th December, and Brentwood’s home game against Heybridge Swifts on 17th December were both postponed due to the pitch at The Arena being waterlogged. Further consistent rain since then (on Thursday night into Friday morning it was torrential), and with more forecast for today and overnight into Saturday, means that tomorrow’s match is likely to be subject to a pitch inspection.

Supporters are advised to check back here or on social media for details of any inspection and any outcome.
