Romford v Athletic Newham Preview

Boro looking for second league win

The visitors to Mayesbrook Park tomorrow afternoon are Athletic Newham and Boro will be looking to carry on from the midweek win at Clapton CFC in the Essex Senior Cup and hopefully pick up a second league win of the season.

Like Boro, Athletic Newham were in Essex Senior Cup action in midweek, and like Boro came away from a trip to face Step 6 opposition with a win. In Newham’s case they visited Coggeshall Town and won 5-3 on penalties after the game had finished 0-0.

Previous Meetings:

Romford have met Athletic Newham only six times since The Kings joined the Essex Senior League in 2021. The first meeting was a 2-2 Essex Senior League draw at Mayesbrook Park in February 2023 but the return fixture was not played after heavy rain had scuppered two attempts to play the game at the Terence MacMillan Stadium. The following season – 2023-24 - saw Newham win 2-1 during Boro’s short-lived tenure at Rookery Hill, but the return at the Terry Mac finished 4-1 to Boro with Hassan Nalbant scoring twice and Amaree Robinson-Jones and Finlay Dorrell getting the others. There was also an Essex Senior Cup tie that season in which Athletic Newham won 5-1 at Mayesbrook Park. The prolific Richard Kone scored a hat-trick in that game and has now moved on to play in the Football League with first Wycombe Wanderers, and now with QPR following his recent move to Loftus Road.

In last season’s Essex Senior League games the sides drew 1-1 at Mayesbrook Park with Praise Ogbebor scoring Boro’s goal, but in the return at Parsloes Park, Newham won 4-1; Harry Brown scored his only goal for the club in what was the last of his four games in a Boro shirt.

This Season:

Like Boro, Newham have not enjoyed the best of starts to the season and currently sit bottom of the table with just a single point from their opening four league games. That point came from a 1-1 draw at home to Great Wakering Rovers, but they have been beaten by Little Oakley, White Ensign, and SOUL Tower Hamlets. They had no better luck in the FA Cup, losing 3-1 at home to Sevenoaks Town in the Extra-Preliminary Round. They did however, win in the Essex Senior Cup as mentioned above. In the FA Vase, Newham received a bye in the First Qualifying Round and will visit Hythe Town in the Second Qualifying Round.
