Barton Rovers 4 Romford 0 By Mike Woods

Boro Buried At Barton
Barton Rovers 4, Romford 0 - Saturday 7th September 2019 - FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Despite trailing at the break, Romford's first half performance suggested that this game was far from beyond them. In the second forty-five minutes however, Barton stepped up a gear and Boro could not find an answer.
With Jonathon Nzengo on one wing, and Rashaad Ogun on the other, Romford made early inroads into the home defence, and after just seven minutes good work by Ogun and Jimmy Cox set up Malaki Toussaint, but his shot cleared the crossbar, which set the tone for the afternoon, with the majority of Boro's efforts off target. Just a moment later, however Romford were grateful for Danny Cossington's intervention when the Boro skipper cleared off the line with Harry Aldridge beaten.
Barton came close to taking the lead after twenty-two minutes when Aldridge was forced to make a fine save, pushing the ball onto the crossbar from a deflected cross. Cossington was then involved at the other end, when a good move that involved Jimmy Cox looked to have put Cossington through with a clear run at goal, but the Boro captain was hauled back by a defender. While Cossington was too far from goal for the defender to be deemed to have denied a goal scoring opportunity, it was still surprising that no card was forthcoming. Cox then put a shot over the bar following a corner, while at the other end Dean Dummett served a warning of what was to follow with a header that was narrowly off target. Great work by Giovanni Palmer on the left set up Jimmy Cox for what looked a certain goal, but somehow Forster in the home goal managed to flick the ball round the post.
With half-time approaching and having countered Barton's every threat, the good work was undone after 43 minutes when a low cross from the left found Dummett who put the home side ahead.
Rashaad Ogun forced Forster into a save from close range in the opening minute of the second half, but it was Barton who scored again when Victor Obosu cut in from the left and fired a low shot past Aldridge after 57 minutes. Four minutes later the game was effectively over when Dummett headed his second of the afternoon in a move that stemmed from a somewhat dubious free-kick awarded to the home side in their own half.
Jaydon Charles might have reduced the deficit when he held off a defender to win the race to be first to a through ball, but his effort, having beaten the keeper, came back off a post. Barton then rattled the woodwork when Nathan Tshikuna's free-kick came back off the bar, and then a long cross from Jonathon Nzengo found Ogun at the far post, but the youngster lifted the ball over the bar as Romford continued to look for a way back into the game.
Barton rounded off a miserable afternoon for Boro when Osobu scored his second from close range in the dying seconds.
