The last meeting between the two clubs back in 1971 was an FA Cup victory for Boro but on this occasion their Southern League Premier Division opponents looked a very strong side and one of the best Romford have met in recent years. The game kicked off in misty conditions and the away team pressed forward from the start winning a number of early corners and pumping in high crosses for their tall forwards, and only six minutes had been played when Hicks was able to head back across goal for Sear to open the scoring. After fifteen minutes it was nearly two when a header came back off the underside of the crossbar allowing the Boro defence to clear.
The home team then started to mount some attacks of their own with Kwasi Marfo cutting in but firing wide after a good long ball down the right by Matt Frew and Ryan Boswell just being beaten to a through ball by the keeper who had to come swiftly off his line. However after twenty eight minutes a Romford clearance was not strong enough and was fired back into the goalmouth by Harris and flicked home by Hicks who look suspiciously offside, to put the visitors two up. Both teams went close before the break with Marfo having his shot blocked after an excellent four man Boro move and a Slough forward riding four tackles before side footing narrowly wide.
As in the first period Slough made the early second half running and in the fifty third minute went three up when Mpi found himself unmarked to turn in Putman's left wing cross. Shortly after they broke fast down the right after a Romford corner and Michael Gooch had to produce a great save to tip a long shot over. At the other end Chinedu McKenzie was proving a handful for the Slough defence and working hard to find space for himself but on three occasions was foiled by good saves from the visiting keeper.
Slough's fourth goal arrived in the seventy fifth minute when Putman gathered a loose ball and smashed an unstoppable shot past Gooch. Although the game was now effectively ended as a contest Romford still showed great spirit to mount a number of dangerous attacks toward the end with Chis Barry having his header tipped over, Joe Scott going very close with another header and a desperately unlucky George Woodward seeing his great free kick cannon back off the post.
