A much changed Boro team were caught cold at the start of this Essex Senior Cup 4th Round tie, conceding two goals in the first twelve minutes. After only five, a quick Brightlingsea attack saw the ball passed across the area to Russell Malton who beat Aaron Omand on his near post. Boro nearly responded almost immediately, but Ryan Imbert could only head over a Tyler Hayes cross from the left. Brightlingsea continued to look dangerous and a left wing cross of their own was converted by an unmarked Oliver Canfer.
Romford did not really threaten until the latter part of the first half when they produced a flurry of attacks, the best of which saw a leaping Nick Reynolds just fail to get on the end of Tom Richardson's excellent cross.
The second half saw a much better performance from Romford and both sides created some chances in an end to end battle, but this changed on the hour when Brightlingsea's Jake Turner received a straight red card for a two footed lunge on James Ishmail. The visitors now pulled everybody back to protect their lead whilst still looking dangerous in the odd breakaway. Despite a couple of attacking substitutions and dominating possession, Romford could not create any real clear cut chances as Brightlingsea defended in depth, until added time when James Ishmail shot home after a mazy dribble into the penalty box. Still the final whistle did not come and a couple of long balls produced scrambles in front of the visitors' goal before they were able to progress into the next round.
