Romford were on the back foot for most of the game with the lively Waltham Abbey forwards causing chaos in and around the Boro area. Aaron Omand in the goal produced a fine save after only six minutes tipping a shot round the post while at the other end Paul Clayton thought he had given the visitors the lead but was ruled offside from the returning Chris Barry's cross. On twenty-eight minutes Abbey had a great chance to break the deadlock when three players raced clear but Aaron Omand produced a great save and then the Abbey striker hit the side netting with the rebound. Both teams produced a few half chances during the rest of the half but nothing that troubled the scorers.
In the fifty-third minute Matt Toms was shown a straight red during a twenty man scuffle but surprisingly no one else was even shown a yellow card. Once again the fast Abbey strikers were causing the stubborn Romford defence some trouble but Aaron Omand comfortably saved everything thrown at him. On eighty-one minutes Paul Clayton headed over from six yards a Joe Oates free kick before the home team once again fluffed their lines on eighty-eight minutes when despite going clean through Aryton Coley's heavy touch allowed Aaron Omand to block the forwards effort. As the clock hit ninety minutes Abbey possibly should have been awarded a penalty when Darelle Russell was brought down in the box but the referee like most incidents during the match, got the decision wrong.
Two minutes into injury time substitute Jamie Dicks found space on the left and sent the ball over the top of the defence finding Tom Richardson who brilliantly lobbed the onrushing keeper on the half volley to send the Romford fans wild.
