Boro spent slighly more time in their opponents half at the start but The Town were first to get the ball in the net only to be given offside to no one’s surprise.
This event was followed by a number of exchanges of play but eventually the scoring was opened and it was the home side who took the lead on 24 minutes when Matt Toms was given the time to turn and tap in when the ball fell at his feet from a head on by Chris Thomas after a free kick by Andy Edmunds.
Shortly after this Mulrooney made the first of his excellent saves when he dived to his left and turned away for a corner what would have been an own goal and then a Maldon free kick by former Boro player Jordan Tolan was headed just over the home bar by Jack Jeffries.
But it was Romford who ended the first half with a flourish only for Thomas, bursting his way through despite a Maldon cry for handball, to blaze the ball well over the visitors bar when it seemed easier to score.
At the restart substitute Kieran Singh took the field in place of Paul White, who had returned to the home side after a long period of injury, quickly settling in.
Jeffries for the visitors was the next to be denied by Mulrooney and then Boro’s Richard Oxby was put through on the right by Kurt Smith but dragged his chance wide of the far post.
Mulrooney was called into action again on 62 minutes saving well from James Abbott and this led to a period of Romford pressure during which Smith could not quite reach a through ball by Edmunds and a good passing move between Edmunds and Singh ended with a shot over the top by James Ishmail which was followed by a Singh/Oxby move being headed just over by Smith.
Boro increased their lead and took the game further away from their visitors on 84 minutes when Smith headed a long ball in across The Town penalty area to Thomas who collected and hit hard and low into his opponents net.
The game then became a stalemate with a two goal deficit being just too much for Maldon, Romford being quite happy to sit on their lead and after four minutes of added time the game came to an end.
Romford squad: Mulrooney, Barry, Pearman, White (Singh 46), Toms (Falco 64), Clayton, Ishmail, Oxby, Smith, Thomas, Edmunds. Subs not used: Senghore, Kavanagh, and Neville.
Boro now have a further three home games which are Redbridge this coming Tuesday, Leyton on Saturday 17th April and Harlow Town on Tuesday 20th April.
