Boro went behind to an early goal but fought back to take all the points. This win took them up to fourteenth in the table which is their highest position since the very early part of the season.

Woods started the strongest and put their visitors under great pressure with attacks down both flanks but the best they had to show for their efforts was a header by Will Hudson which found its way into Romford keeper Danny Mullrooney’s safe hands. For their part Romford tried to get back in the game but continued to be second best.

It was no surprise though when the hosts got a goal after previously hitting their visitors’ upright with a shot from Ryan Takeley when, from another swift attack and low cross down the right by Anton Lewis, Hudson was successful with his low shot giving Mulrooney no chance.

Woods continued to have the better of the play while Boro went back at them with counter attacks and forced their hosts to clear off the line at one point while Northwood’s Kyle Matthews hit over the top when well placed.

Romford gradually started to compete on even terms and put their opponents under pressure from time to time while Mulrooney at the other end had to act sharply to save from Woods’ Anton Robinson.

In their efforts to get back on terms with a number of corners and free kicks most of which were taken by Andy Edmunds who had replaced Paul Kavanagh who had finally succumbed to the hamstring weakness he was carrying from the previous game.

It was from an Edmunds corner on the left that Brad Falco levelled the scores for half time with a deflecting header into the corner of the home net.

The start of the second period was very much more evenly balanced than the first with the first attempt of note going to Northwood with and effort over their visitors’ crossbar who replied with a shot by Edmunds which was too far out to cause too much trouble to the home keeper.

Another combined Boro move between Chris Thomas and Kevin Neville ended with Kurt Smith, who was always putting his opponents defence under pressure, taking his turn to shoot over and Woods, once again, did the same.

On 65 minutes Smith was rewarded for his industry when he took a through ball from Toran Senghore and placed it firmly past Mitch Swain in the home goal.

Northwood came back strongly after this set back and there were several goalmouth scrambles in the Romford area which Lewis lunging for a cross from the right managed to get the ball over the visitors’ crossbar from almost on the goal-line .

During this period the of home pressure the home side also got the ball into the net when Danny Power glanced in a left wing corner into the visitors’ net which was disallowed much to his anger and Mulrooney caught well from at the far post from a free kick from the same direction.

It was the visitors, however, who made the final flourish when Edmunds broke through only for his low shot to be smothered by the home keeper and the final whistle after seven minutes of added time with Boro having gained yet another away win against a team in a higher league position than themselves.

Romford squad: Mulrooney, Barry, Neville, Ishmail, Toms, Clayton, Thomas, Senghore (Pearman 88), Smith, Falco, Kavanagh (Edmunds 24). Subs not used: Singh, Lord and Mathews (GK).

Boro’s next game is on Saturday, April 3rd when they entertain Harlow Town.
