From the time play started Boro's efforts were not helped either by some inconsistent refereeing which saw home players penalised and even yellow carded for minor infringements while the opposition seemed to get away with a number of more serious offences.
Toran Sengore was first on target for the home side but his hard worked shot was aimed straight at the visiting keeper.
It was the Scholars who opened the scoring first on 10 minutes when the home side failed to defend a free kick properly and Lewis Payne was able to beat home keeper Danny Mullrooney with his shot from the back of the penalty area.
Paul White was unlucky on 18 minutes when his far post header, from a well delivered Paul Kavanagh corner on the right, rebounded off a Potters Bar upright.
Play was equal throughout the rest of the first half but was interrupted by many inexplicable stoppages by the man in the middle and what chances Romford had were mainly from dead ball deliveries which failed to cause any problems for the visiting defence.
Half time came with no further score and with Romford still being in with a chance of getting something out of the game on the balance play.
Some nine minutes after the break Chris Thomas was unlucky with his header just clearing the visitors’ crossbar from a Bobby Port free kick.
Just after this two Potters Bar forwards broke clear with the ball yards offside but were not called back and from this attack a visiting right wing corner was given away by a protesting Romford defence.
Unfortunately for the home team this corner to the far post was headed back across goal for the visitors’ Jordan Watson to hook into goal from close in to give them a two goal lead on 55 minutes.
This injustice kick-started a Boro fight back but their dead ball accuracy let them down as it had throughout the game with free kicks and corners arriving straight into the visiting keeper’s arms or being easily cleared by his defenders.
The closest Romford came to scoring during the second half of the post half time period was from a crossed ball from the right by Thomas which, under great pressure from the visiting keeper, Paul Burnett could only loop his header just wide and Steve Willis had a clear shooting chance just before the end of play but blasted it over his opponents’ crossbar.
Romford squad: Mulrooney, Port, Neville (Taylor 73), White, Clayton, Heed (Burnett 73), Nelson, Willis, Thomas, Senghore, Kavanagh. Substitutes not used: Barry and Mathews (GK).
Boro's next two league matches are both away. Firstly to local rivals Brentwood Town this Tuesday evening November 24th and then at Wingate & Finchley on the following Saturday November 28th .
