Romford had hoped to gain some points from Ware who were sitting below them in the league table but a generally lacklustre display and much determination by their visitors prevented them from doing so.

A scoreless first half was interspersed with many free kicks and ultimately the match as entertainment was not helped by these stoppages. Subsequently most of the attacking opportunities for both sides came from free kicks or corners.

The few that came from open play were balanced on both sides. For the Boro Remi Nelson put a shot over the top, Martin Heed placed a shot wide from a pass from Kurt Smith who, in turn, was unable to beat the visiting keeper when he was put through one on one.

For their part the Blues also had a good share of possession but the nearest they came to a goal was a low cross from the right which went right across the home goal line and found its way untouched to the far touchline and an attempt which ended up on the top of the goal netting.

The second half continued mostly as the first had done but it was Ware who eventually took the lead when a free kick from left mid field cleared the home defence and Matt Turpin coming in on the blind side was easily able to sweep the ball into the Romford net.

Just after this the home side nearly equalised when a Smith shot just clipped the top of the visitors’ crossbar. But it was the Blues who scored again on 60 minutes when Turpin scored his second by heading a loose bouncing ball in the Boro area over home ‘keeper Neil Finn.

Romford brought the game alight again a few minutes later when Chris Thomas collected a free kick from right mid field by Bobbie Port and drove it into the Ware net to reduce the deficit to one and set up a grand finale.

In the latter stages of the game the home side were unlucky when both Nelson and Heed hit the Ware uprights with low shots and were unable, in the end, to force an equaliser despite four minutes of added time. And so Boro went down to an unexpected 1-2 defeat which provided their opponents with only their second victory of the season so far.

Romford squad: Finn, Barry, Kavanagh, (Neville 49), Willis, Clayton, Gammons (Port 60), Nelson, Heed, Smith, Senghore, Burnett. (Thomas 66). Substitutes not used: Taylor and Mullrooney (GK).
