Boro built on their midweek success with a confident and skilful performance at the famous old Hare & Hounds Ground.

It was Leyton, having shared the points in their previous two league games, who shaded the early part of the play but Romford gradually came into the game and took the lead on 12 minutes when, from a lovely multi player move, Martin Heed turned and crossed right footed from the left for Paul Burnett to head in past home keeper Adam Rafis who got his hand to the ball but could not stop it going past him.

The visitors comfortably held this one goal lead throughout the first half and always looked as though they might increase on this although the Lillywhites had their moments. In particularly, two efforts which hit the post, including a free kick from just outside the area by Laurent Hanici on 40 minutes which rebounded off the right hand corner angle having beaten Boro’s Neil Finn all the way.

Just after the half time restart Danny Mullrooney replaced Finn in the visitors goal, the latter having suffered from an injury when rising to deal with a dangerous ball into his area mid way in the first period. Danny was soon called into action, having to come out of his goal to block a shot from a dangerous Lillywhites raid on the left.

Following this goaltender change Toran Senghore (who, coincidentally, was returning to his previous club) was unlucky with a shot which whistled just over the Leyton bar when it was cleared out to him from Romford corner on the right.

On an hour’s play a Burnett/Kurt Smith move resulted in the latter just firing over the bar and then just after this Smith chased a ball down the left and, while backing with it into the home area, was awarded a penalty when he was adjudged to have been fouled. Paul Kavanagh took the resulting spot kick and his exocet type groundshot gave Rafis no chance.

From this point, with their two goal lead, Boro kept a stranglehold on the game which they never looked like relinquishing, Leyton for their part tried their best to get into dangerous areas but the nearest they got to anything resembling this was when a knee high centre across the visitors’ goal from the right found its way to the left hand touchline without any player on either side being able to get a touch on it.

Boro put the game well beyond the reach of their hosts on 88 minutes when a Burnett turn on the left and right foot chip towards the far corner of the home goal was headed firmly into the roof of the net by Heed.

After four minutes of added time this second Romford winning game on the trot came to a close. For my part it would be difficult to select a Boro man of the match with every man playing their part in an excellent performance.

Romford squad: Finn (Mulrooney 49), Barry, Kavanagh, Clayton, White, Gammons (Willis 70), Heed, Nelson, Smith (Thomas 85), Senghore, Burnett. Substitute not used: K. Neville.
