Boro started well and for the first twenty minutes were well on top with Hussein Isa firing just over and Jack Barry having a header cleared off the line, but with Romford pushing forward Heybridge hit back with a swift counter attack and winger Soloman Ofori fired low past Atu Ngoy from the right hand side of the penalty area.
Romford continued to push forward and new signings Ben Jones and Billy Hunt linked up well with the later having his shot well saved by Nick Eyres in the Heybridge goal. Billy Hunt had another chance in the forty-third minute but the forward could only head over after James Ishmail had found him at the back post. Right on half time Ryan Imbert raced through but his poor first touch allowed the keeper to stop the attack. However the Romford striker did seem to be clipped and the referee could have easily given a foul and a red card against centre half Taylor Hastings.
The second half continued in the same way as the first with Romford pressing forward but Heybridge doubled their lead with a carbon copy breakaway, Ofori firing home again on sixty-three minutes. Hussein Isa nearly got the Boro back in the game but his shot was acrobatically saved by Eyres.
Heybridge made it three on seventy-five when James Bunn headed in unmarked and Michael Cheek scored the fourth on eighty minutes after avoiding Romford challenges and slotting home. Cheek made it five on eighty-nine minutes after his shot was deflected past the wrong footed Atu Ngoy but the Romford keeper did manage to save a stoppage time penalty from Cheek to make the final scoreline slightly less of a travesty. On another day Romford could have walked away winners but Heybridge showed they are promotion candidates with swift counter attacks and clinical finishing. One final point was that the game was played in good spirit on a very wet pitch with no bad fouls and none of the theatrics sadly displayed by the previous Wednesday's visitors.
