Maldon opened the scoring on four minutes when Joe Gardener burst into the box and looked to be fouled, but the referee played advantage as the ball came to Jamie Guy to curl the ball past Atu Ngoy in the Boro goal.
Romford came back at the league leaders straight away with Ryan Imbert and Nick Reynolds both going close and dominated most of the play in the first half but Maldon always looked a threat on the counter attack with their fast forwards, and Guy nearly doubled the lead on twenty nine minutes when he headed wide.
Nick Reynolds thought he had equalised for Romford but the referee incorrectly adjudged the powerful striker to have handled the ball. The referee at this point appeared to be out of his depth with incident after incident causing confrontations between both the sides and it appeared that whoever shouted the loudest earned a free kick and this brought many theatrics from the visiting team. Ten minutes before half time Michael Sammut appeared to be brought down by the Maldon full back in the penalty area but the referee gave a goal kick when it could only have been a penalty or a corner.
Maldon took more control of the second half and their domination eventually led to a second goal when Dave Wareham went on a run beating three Romford defenders before firing an unstoppable shot into the Boro net.
Romford's never say die attitude continued and Paul Clayton was twice unlucky not to get them back in the game when first his shot was blocked on the line, then moments later his free header from a Lewis Francis corner went just wide.
Maldon put the gloss on their victory when Atu Ngoy who was struggling with a leg injury kicked a clearance straight to Chris Bryan who tucked the ball home from twelve yards in the third minute of injury time.
