Romford started brightly and after seven minutes a Hussein Isa corner bounced up onto the arm of a Sudbury defender and the referee pointed to the spot. Kurt Smith stepped up but dragged his left foot shot just wide of the post meaning that Romford had now missed their last seven penalties.
Midway through the first half good work by Chris Sullivan set up David Ottley but after turning onto his left foot he shot high and wide. On twenty-nine minutes the referee awarded the game's second penalty when Jack Barry was harshly judged to have handled the ball when it was blasted at him from only a few yards away. David Wakeham stepped up for Sudbury but like Kurt Smith before him, he too shot wide. Wakeham went close just before half time and another Hussein Isa corner was dropped by Gay in goal but the ball was scrambled back into the keeper's arms.
Romford dominated the early part of the second half with James Ishmail heading straight at the keeper but Sudbury came back strongly with Wakeham shooting wide and Griffiths forcing Elliott Anderson into a good save.
On seventy minutes Hussein Isa shot just wide after Kurt Smith's layoff before Griffiths shot wide and and the same player forced another good save from Elliott Anderson. With five minutes to go substitute Nick Reynold's header fell to Chris Sullivan but his shot flew over the bar.
On eighty-seven minutes Romford took the lead when Nick Reynold's cross was missed by Sudbury full back Robbie Martin and Jamie Dicks smashed the ball home. Youngster Michael Clarke nearly doubled the lead in the ninety-second minute after a good ball by Ricki Mackin, but he shot over.
Injury time brought two more chances one for each side, with Daniel Emmanuel shooting wide for the visitors and Chris Sullivan unable to round Gay after being presented with the ball on the edge of the box. When the whistle went Romford were cheered off by the loyal fans after securing their best points finish since promotion three seasons ago.
