In the first few minutes a Ware elbow in a Romford head resulted in just a yellow card to be followed some ten minutes later by a straight red card to visiting skipper Paul Clayton for a miss-directed sliding tackle.
For the remaining seventy minutes or so, ten man Boro played good football, held their opponents at bay and generally held their own.
With the scores being level at half time it was the hosts who had the best chances in the second period but shots went wide instead of being on target. For visitors Abs Seymour put in the best effort but his opposing keeper got down well to save.
As the game came to an end it seemed that Boro ten pairs of tired legs had defied the gluey conditions to win a point but on 88 minutes Ware’s Lewis Jones forced the ball into to the visitors’ net from close in after a goalmouth scramble to give his side a 1-0 lead.
And that was that except for the referee straight red carding Romford substitute Jamie Dicks for a trip a decision which led to a mass brawl involving both sides on the stand side half-way touchline from which, extraordinarily, Boro players seemed to be the only ones who received any form of discipline.
So another thoroughly unsatisfactory visit to Wodson Park came to an end for the Romford players and supporters alike.
Romford squad: Johnson; Ottley; Kavanagh; J. Barry; Toms; Seymour; Clayton ©; Oates (Mackin 28); Odedoyin; Reynolds (Smith 80); Edmunds (Dicks 67). Unused substitute; Anderson (GK).
