On 10 minutes Paul Clayton put Wale Odedoyin through to beat both his marker and the visiting keeper to score with a low shot into an empty net. Two minutes after this Boro Jack Barry was left clear at the far post to hit a Paul Kavanagh right wing corner into the far top corner of his opposing net.
As play moved into the second period Romford seemed to be holding their lead comfortably and looked the more likely to score the next goal but it was visitors who had the final word in controversial circumstances with a goal in extra added time.
In almost the final attack of the match a fierce Chatham shot was deemed to have been handled deliberately on the goal-line by a defending Jack Barry after being hit straight at him. This led to straight red card for the Boro central defender after which Chats’ Lee Hales converted the resulting penalty bringing the match to an end.
Romford squad: Johnson; Ottley; Kavanagh; J. Barry; Toms; Seymour; Clayton ©; Sullivan (Oates 81); Odedoyin; Reynolds (Skidmore 70); Edmunds (C.Barry 85). Unused substitute: E.Anderson (GK).
