Play was very even in the first quarter of the game with both sides looking very lively with fast moving play down the flanks but it was the visitors who opened the scoring on 27 minutes when Romford failed to clear a ball in their area and Town’s Jon Moore was first to a loose ball and his slightly sliced shot found its way into the corner of the home net.
Despite this set-back Boro continued to compete well but failed to get the ball into a shooting position of note and when they were stretched out after one such attack their visitors made one of their quick raids down the right and the ball was crossed low into the home goalmouth where an unmarked Neil Johnson was able to choose his spot and give his team a 2-0 lead which they held for the final ten minutes of the half.
As the second half began Romford started off in determined fashion to get back into the game but their task became even more difficult when, on 51 minutes, an Enfield Town attack down the right resulted in a hard low cross which Boro right back David Ottley in his attempts to clear only managed to hook into his own net to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Boro still refused to give up and had their two best efforts on goal starting on 67 minutes when a Nick Reynolds head on was met with a thunderous long distance volley by Paul Clayton which Noel Imber in the visitors’ goal was only able to hold on second attempt and then ten minutes later Imber had to move smartly to parry an Ellis Skidmore shot on target.
Sadly the home side’s fate was finally sealed on 78 minutes when the resulting penalty from a mistimed tackle in their area was firmly struck home by Rudi Hall to take them 0-4 behind and a couple of minutes after this another Town raid and low cross down their right was met by an arriving Walid Matata who placed the ball firmly into his opposing net at the far post to take his team’s lead to a final and unbeatable 5-0 lead.
Boro never gave up trying to reduce their deficit during the final ten minutes or so which were left of the game but most of the time they had to chase really hard to prevent the best side to visit Mill Field so far this season from adding further to their goal tally.
Romford squad: Johnson; Ottley; Kavanagh; J. Barry; Toms; Seymour; Clayton ©; Edmunds (Martin 75); Skidmore; Sullivan (Reynolds 64); Dicks (Oates 64). Unused substitutes: Mackin and Anderson (GK).
