However, it was Romford opened the scoring with a goal inside the first three minutes when new signing Ellis Skidmore scored a stunning debut goal. Receiving a through ball just inside the Sudbury half from Paul Clayton he stepped forward a few paces and drove the ball from fully 40 yards over home ‘keeper Danny Gay’s head and into the back of the net.
Boro fans had only just got over the joy of their team taking the lead when a second goal came for the visitors. The ball was crossed wide to Joe Oates moving into the home penalty area on the left. Oates’ strong cross shot was palmed away well by Gay only for Skidmore again to be on hand to convert at the far post.
Temporarily stunned by this further setback the Yellows became disjointed but urged on by their large vociferous support they began to fight back and the rest of the first half developed into an end to end battle.
Romford, who had to deal with the substitution of central defender Paul White by James Ishmail after just 20 minutes, almost scored a third when Oates drove over running into a Jahmel Heywoord right wing cross.
Eventually did Sudbury managed to reduce their deficit on 36 minutes when a cross from the right was headed back from the far post and Richard Howell got there first to drive the ball in from close in.
With the home side fired up in their attempts to level the scores play became a little feisty and some yellow cards were issued to both teams so it was a good thing when the first half came to an end to calm things down with Romford still being one goal to the good.
In the second half Sudbury pressed hard forward from the start and it was Howell, once again, who was on hand to head in an equalizer from a right wing cross on 56 minutes.
The Yellows continued to attack strongly urged on once more by their large support but had only close, but misdirected, shots and headers to show for their efforts as the Boro continued to defended stubbornly and break away on attack when they could.
As the game moved into the last quarter of an hour the home side lost a little of their momentum and Romford began to mount a few more interesting looking attacks into their opponents half but the whistle blew after three minutes of added time as this momentous league battle came to an end with honours still even.
Romford squad: Johnson; Ottley; Dicks; White (Ishmail 20); Clayton ©; Seymour; C. Barry; J.Barry (Messenger 65); Skidmore (Kavanagh 81); Heywoord; Oates. Unused substitute: Anderson (GK).
