The first half was almost totally devoid of any meaningful attacks by either side with the Rovers having the clearest goal scoring opportunity when one of their forwards was put clear through with only Lamar Johnson in the home goal to beat but he dallied too much and ended up by tamely touching the ball into his opposing keeper’s grateful hands.
The second half picked up a bit but still mainly took place in midfield areas and when the ball arrived in either penalty area no clear chances were created with scrappy tussles ensuing and defences managing to scramble the ball away.
Rather surprisingly the Boro took the lead on 68 minutes. A free kick from the left hand touchline into the visitors’ penalty area eventually found it’s way to an unmarked home skipper Paul Clayton and he gratefully lifted the ball into the roof of his opponents’ net from close in.
Great Wakering then woke up to the fact that they would have to put more effort into their game if they wanted to get something out of it and their cause was greatly helped when the home side went down to ten men with around fifteen minutes of the game remaining.
This event came about with a dual tackle by both Abs Seymour and Addian Clifton on a Rovers’ player in the middle of the home half. The referee decided that he had to punish somebody and chose Seymour who already had one yellow card against his name so a second one to the home midfielder was also followed by a red and expulsion from the field.
Despite their one man advantage and four minutes of added time the visitors were unable to benefit from their greater share of the play with their attacks foundering on off target shooting and a resolute all round home ten man team performance.
Romford squad: Johnson; Ottley; Dicks; Clayton ©; White; Seymour; Lee (Clarke 67); J.Barry; Richardson; Clifton; Oates (Mackin 87). Unused substitutes: Toms and Anderson (GK).
