Despite an over officious referee both sides tried to keep the game moving but it was the Boro who eventually came out winners and had the better of the few clear chances that occurred.
For their part The Motormen made regular incursions into the home end throughout but their shots and headers on goal were either charged down by a resolute home defence, delivered off target or blocked off with some excellent saves by Lamar Joseph-Johnson in the Boro goal.
The first half was coming to an end when Kurt Smith scored the only goal of the game on 39 minutes. He cut in from the right and shot left footed across James May in the visitors' goal. Just before the break Hyun Jin Lee put a lovely weighted ball through to Jahmel Heywoord on the right but his cross shot went just wide and Lee himself during the latter part of the game found himself clear on the edge of the visitors' penalty area but his thunderous drive came crashing off his opponents' cross bar to safety.
