Boro were denied their first visit to Coles Park since 1992 because of ongoing pitch problems, with this match being switched to the more familiar terrain at Tilbury where their North London opponents have taken up temporary residence. From the start the "home" team forced a fast pace which was to continue for the whole match but this was in the main comfortably dealt with by Romford with their opponents rarely getting a sight of goal during the first half, and Michael Gooch mostly called into action to field hopeful long balls forward.
After fifteen minutes the Haringey keeper had to get down smartly to tip a Chris Taylor left foot shot past the post after Adeyinka Cole and Nick Reynolds had combined well down the right. James Ishmail headed over on the half hour and three minutes later Reynolds was played through into the box with only the keeper to beat but chopped down from behind. The referee was a ridiculous distance behind play but his lineman on the near side had a clear sight of the incident. However, as we have observed on a number of occasions this season the assistants are unwilling to take on the responsibility for major decisions and the flag stayed down. With only a few minutes left before the break Haringey suddenly started to look more threatening and hit the post with an angled header.
The woodwork once again came to Romford's rescue five minutes into the second half, this time the crossbar but shortly after the visitors took the lead on fifty five minutes. Reynolds found space on the right and his cross looped up after a deflection, but was then brought under control by Taylor who turned on the proverbial sixpence and got off a snapshot through a crowd of players across the goal and just inside the post. Gooch made a good save and was also dealing well with crosses into his goalmouth but was given no chance after sixty five minutes with Willer glancing in a header for the equaliser from a left wing corner.
From then on there was no let up in the pace of the game with Haringey still looking to play the long ball to their speedy forwards and Romford having the territorial advantage with a more measured build up. Haringey went near with an on target shot deflected over via the boot of a grounded Romford defender and the rugged home defence was forced into some last ditch clearances from probing balls into the box by the visitors. In the end the draw was probably a fair result and both teams can be happy that they had given the maximum effort to produce an entertaining game
