Both sides started the match on the same number of points, but Romford were the better team throughout and only a good last ditch tackle stopped Nick Reynolds opening the scoring in the fifth minute and two minutes later the Soham keeper was brave to dive at the feet of Joe Scott to deny the forward. However, not for the first time this season Romford fell behind after a strong start, paying the price for not clearing a twelfth minute corner properly with the ball allowed to ricochet around in the area before Soham's Jordan Gent scrambled in the opener, and they could have scored again shortly after when a shot from out wide flashed across the goalmouth. Scott had another good chance for Boro in the nineteenth minute when he was set up by Jamie Dicks but his left foot drive was saved low down and six minutes later the keeper tipped the ball off Scott's boot when Nick Reynolds crossed in from the right. Just before the break Soham were penalised for a nasty looking foul and a number of players from both sides squared up to each other. Salim Relizani swung a punch at Romford's George Woodward that the full back reacted to and both were shown the red card. Right on half time Scott had another chance, but his header went just wide of the post.

Soham had already hit the bar and Michael Gooch had produced an excellent save from the rebound before they doubled their lead in the fifty-fourth minute when Romford's Matt Frew seemed to be fouled before the ball found it's way to Ross Paterson free on goal and he slotted the ball past the keeper and into the net. Nick Reynolds created space for himself in the box at the other end and his left foot shot was tipped over before the hosts introduced substitutes Chinedu McKenzie and Akwasi Marfo, and the latter completely changed the game in the seventieth minute by scoring with his first sight of goal, curling a great left foot shot around a number of bodies in the crowded box and into the corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Marfo's dribbling and speed were causing a lot of problems and after another run, this time beating three men, his pass found Chris Taylor whose shot was just about saved. Boro now had their tails up launching a number of attacks, but the visitors defended well and time wasted at every opportunity. With Romford throwing everyone forward in search of an equaliser there was inevitably space at the back that Soham exploited on the break but they could not add to their score. In the end though, it did not matter as Romford were unable to find what would have been a deserved equaliser and the three points allowed Soham to leapfrog Boro in the league table.
