Despite the result Romford had started well and created the game's first chance with Chris Barry's twenty-five yard curling right foot effort beating the Bury keeper but agonisingly going just wide of the far post in the tenth minute while a minutes later at the other end, Michael Gooch misjudged a cross and the forward's header was cleared off the goal line. Romford were looking vulnerable from set pieces and Gooch made a fantastic save, tipping the ball over after the Bury centre back found space in the box, but from the resulting corner the same player found himself alone again and his header was bundled home by Ollie Canfer in the thirteenth minute. Liam Burgess making his first start for the club played a nice slide rule pass into Joe Scott but his left foot drive was pushed wide and Chris Barry headed just over from George Woodward's whipped in free kick. Gooch once again had to be alert at the other end when another free kick was headed towards goal before Bury doubled their lead in the thirty-eighth minute when Romford failed to deal with a high ball properly and when the forward crossed back in there was confusion between Woodward and Gooch, leaving Canfer to bag his second of the day and give Bury a more comfortable lead to take into the half time break.
Shortly after the restart in the forty-eighth minute another high ball into the Romford area was not dealt with and a header past Gooch looked likely to extend the lead, but Chris Barry did enough to get back and clear the ball but only four minutes later and it was three when Bury attacked after Ryan Boswell went down injured and caught Romford out as they were short at the back allowing Remi Garrett to out jump Gooch and head home the cross at the far post. The Boro did get a goal back when Barry did well to win the ball in midfield and find Burgess who split the defence with his pass and Chinedu McKenzie slotted home in the fifty-ninth minute but twelve minutes later it was four for the hosts as Sam Reed raced onto a long ball, rounded Gooch and fired home. Deep into stoppage time and Bury got their fifth when Gooch's clearance hit his own defender on the back and the ball fell kindly to Bradley Barber to shoot into the empty net. Danny Cossington picked up Romford's fourth yellow card of the day as the referee decided to book a Romford player despite the Bury player kicking the ball away and that summed up his terrible performance as he seemed to want to be the centre of attention rather then let a game of football be played by two spirited but fair teams.
