On Boro's first visit to The Mayplace Ground neither team gave a great account of themselves with the visitors edging possession and chances. Phoenix created the first goal scoring opportunity in the second minute when a cross from the right was headed wide by Aaron Jeffery but for a long time neither team could break down the other's defences. In the twenty second minute and after a swift counter attack Joe Bricknell had a shot from the edge of the box well saved while Matt Frew fired over from the edge of the box in the thirty-third minute. The ever impressive Greg Akpele did well down the left wing in the fortieth minute but his cross was just out of reach of Chris Taylor. Neither team could find a steady tempo mainly due to some really poor decisions from the officials that mystified both teams.
The second half was much better for Romford enjoying a lot more possession but Michael Gooch had to be on full alert to intercept a cross from the right wing early on and Harrison Carnegie blazed well over when he should have hit the target. In the sixty-sixth minute the ball found its way to Chris Taylor from a Romford corner but the striker could only fire over when shooting on the turn. Phoenix midfielder Jason Goodchild could have been sent off in the seventy-third minute when he over run the ball and crashed recklessly into the Boro defender but was only shown a yellow card before getting away with an even more out of control tackle in the eighty-fourth minute that the out of his depth referee did not even award a free kick for. In between the two challenges Romford twice went close when Greg Akpele, popping up on the right curled a left foot shot that was beaten out by the keeper followed by a Jake Giddings effort that was once again saved after the midfielder had danced his way into the penalty area in the seventy-sixth minute. A clash of heads forced both teams into substitutions and as the game petered out Romford nearly threw the game away with a defensive error but the first Phoenix shot on target in the match was blocked on the line by Sam Burton before the final whistle blew.
