Boro gave a good account of themselves but eventually went down to the odd goal in five against opponents in the play off zone ten league places above them.

In this game Town were always slightly the more cohesive due to Boro having to make a number of changes due to injuries and suspensions but they never managed to turn this into much dominance except for a short period at the end of the first half.

Romford had the better of the very early chances with nothing to show for it and then their visitors began to join in the contest.

The home side had the first best chance on 24 minutes when a long kick by Matt Toms was chested down by Paul Clayton but Brad Falco was unable to keep his shot on target.

However Boro went into a 1-0 lead a minute later when Paul Kavanagh put a perfect curving free kick from the left into the visitors penalty area and, Toms timing his run perfectly, headed the ball past the left hand of ‘keeper Rob Blackburne and into his net.

Enfield Town responded with their own efforts and then Chris Thomas for the home side was put through but was off target which was followed by Jordan Lockie for Town shooting wide when well placed.

On 40 minutes the visitors equalised from a corner from the left when their number 6 Richard Morton was not marked closely enough and his header crept slowly into the home net at the right hand upright. Four minutes later a Stuart Blackburne header from a cross from his right looped over Danny Mulrooney in the home goal to give Town a 2-1 interval lead.

Romford made a number of positional changes at half time and this move was rewarded just three minutes after the restart when Toran Senghore, controlling the ball well on the right hand dead ball line, put in a hard low cross which Thomas lunged at and came to Brad Falco who turned well and scored in the roof of his opponents’ net.

Both teams then strove for the winner without success and then Boro almost scored when a crashing shot from some 40 yards out on the left just cleared the visitors’ crossbar having looked as it was going in over their ‘keepers head and Thomas failed to control a chance in the visitors’ penalty area.

Play then continued end to end and a swift move down the right for Enfield Town on 80 minutes led to an Andy Wallaces run and pass to Stuart Blackburne who gave Mulrooney no chance with a shot just inside his right hand post.

The contest still wasn’t over yet though as the home side refused to be beaten and both Clayton and Kurt Smith failed to get on target with chances from free kicks.

The match ended with the visitors hanging on to their precious one goal lead by playing the ball into the area of their hosts’ corner flags and their ‘keeper plaintively asking the assistant referee how much longer there was to go with five minutes left to play.

Altogether this was another excellent performance by Boro who refused to be overawed by the reputation and record of their visitors.

Romford squad: Mulrooney, Barry, Neville (Cossons 84), Ishmail, Toms, Clayton,Thomas, Senghore Smith, Falco, Kavanagh (Edmunds 75). Subs not used: Griffiths, Pearman and Finn (GK).

Boro’s next game is away to Northwood this coming Saturday March 27 for which there is a joint player/supporter coach leaving Mawney Road School at 12 midday (Please note that there is no pick up from the Brentwood Holiday Inn).
