What a difference a short break makes! Romford came out of their traps like a storm and never stopped running for the whole of this pulsating game.

The real action started with a Paul Kavanagh free kick on the right from which Martin Heed shot well over the home bar.

Thamesmead then had two corners in succession without creating any real danger to the Boro goal.

A further free kick by Scott Truman from the half way line was also hit over the bar by Jack Barry followed shortly by one for the home side but offside was given against them.

On twenty minutes of play the deadlock was broken when James Gammons determinedly won the ball in midfield and moved it on to Barry whose pass for Kurt Smith to run on to was hit low and hard into The Mead’s net via both uprights.

Five minutes after this a Thameside move led to a fine save from Romford keeper Neil Finn who had to had to give away a home corner which they were unable to benefit from.

This lack of success and that of many other home attacks was due, in no small way, to a Boro back four which stood firm throughout the game and their combative and creative mid field.

After the halftime break play continued in the same way with the visitors in ascendancy and they eventually went 2-0 into the lead on 68 minutes when central defender Matt Toms stabbed in a loose ball from a Kavanagh right wing corner inside The Mead’s near post.

With four minutes of the ninety to go Romford completed the game scoring when Smith ran through and beat the home keeper with a low shot to his right and the game came to a close after five minutes of added time.

This was arguably Boro’s best performance of the season in which it is impossible to pick out any particular name as every player on the field gave 100% and they thoroughly deserved this fine away victory over their second placed league opponents.

Romford squad: Finn, Clayton (Thomas 84), Neville, Truman, Toms, Gammons (Chalk 68), Heed, Barry, Smith, Senghore (Protheroe 89), Kavanagh. Subs not used King and Mullrooney (GK).

Boro’s next match is this coming Saturday when they visit Ilford’s ground to play Waltham Forest in their next Ryman One North League fixture.
