The early exchanges saw both teams struggle to come to terms with the windy conditions and hard pitch and a lot of passes were going astray. Boro were also under the added pressure of their fight against relegation and Aaron Omand twice had to get down sharply to save good Cheshunt efforts. It took a while, but Romford started to get the better of the midfield battle and despite over hitting some free kicks and long balls forward they created the better chances for the rest of the half. Loui Hazelwood and Abs Seymour severely tested Hayward in the home goal, but in the 37th minute Nick Reynolds timed his run perfectly on the right to collect Abs Seymour's diagonal free kick over the defence and from a very tight angle drove his shot across the keeper and into the far corner. Not long after another Abs Seymour free kick caught Hayward by surprise and he spilled the ball backwards over his head but it hit the crossbar and bounced to safety.
Romford did not let the interval interrupt their superiority but could not make anything of a number of half chances to get the vital second. Cheshunt were also looking dangerous at times on the break but were mainly getting closed down well into their own half by a Boro side who were all working tremendously hard for the cause. Manager Paul Martin held off with his substitutions but got the timings just right, gradually bringing off his attacking three who had all done their job. A serious looking injury to a Cheshunt man caused a lot of stoppage time and did not do much for the nerves of the usual large blue and gold following, but the fresh legs up front helped to mostly keep the home team pegged in their own half and Joe Scott came very near to putting the result beyond doubt.
The final whistle brought a tremendous roar of elation and relief on and off the field and Boro now go into the final match at home to old rivals Ware knowing that the teams below have everything to do.
