Boro face Woodford Town on Saturday

Romford will face Woodford Town in a Pre-Season Friendly at Mayesbrook Park on Saturday 24th July, with a 4pm kick-off.

Woodford Town are, like Walthamstow FC, whom Boro played recently, an East London club with a complex history.

A club named Woodford Town were formed in 1937, playing at Snakes Lane. Members of the Delphian League, Metropolitan League, and Greater London League at various times, they frequently played Romford Reserves in the Metropolitan League. The sides last met during the 1970-71 season, playing each other four times, with Woodford winning 4-1 in the league at Brooklands. The sides drew 3-3 at Snakes Lane. The teams also met twice in the Autumn Shield, with Boro winning 7-2 in one match, but losing 2-1 in the other.

Woodford were evicted from Snakes Lane in 1993 while members of the London Spartan League, and they dropped into intermediate football before regaining senior status and joining the Essex Senior League in 1999. Romford met Woodford Town four times in Essex Senior League fixtures between 1992 and 2003, and won all four. The club folded in 2003, and reformed in 2015, lasting just one season.

A club under the name of Mauritius Sports were established in 2000, joining the Essex Senior League and changing their name to Mauritius Sports & Pennant following a merger with Walthamstow Avenue & Pennant. Boro met the newly merged club four times in Essex Senior League games between 2007 and 2009, winning three and drawing one.

The club were subsequently renamed Mauritius Sports Association UK before becoming Haringey & Waltham Development in 2011. The club became Haringey & Waltham in 2016, and finally, Woodford Town in 2017.

The club has played home games at Wadham Lodge, Coles Park (home of Haringey Borough), the Terence MacMillan Stadium, Broxbourne Borough, and Harlow Town, but have now moved back to Woodford to play at Ashton Playing Fields.

This then, is the first meeting between the clubs since the Essex Senior League game at Aveley in 2009, when Romford won 4-1; our opponents were then going under the name of Mauritius Sports & Pennant.

Admission prices for Saturday's game are:
