Saturday 2nd November 2019 - BetVictor Isthmian League North

Strong winds and driving rain made this a difficult afternoon at The Arena, and after leading 3-1 with twenty minutes left, Romford had to settle for a point as once again corners from the left proved their undoing. Anthony Page - making his debut in the Romford goal after his move from Waltham Abbey - made a double save in the 70th minute and looked to have preserved the two goal advantage Romford then held, but from the resulting corner Cameron Watson turned the ball home from close range to halve Boro's lead, and then with just two minutes remaining, another corner from the left flank was headed home by Sam Mulready to complete the away side's recovery.

Romford's two goal lead had come courtesy of second half strikes by Danny Nesbitt and Giovanni Palmer, after Soham's Tom Newman had equalised Reece Tranter's first half goal for Romford.

With the wind in their favour in the first half, Romford might have hoped to turn round more than just one goal to the good, a goal that came thanks to a strong run down the left flank by Giovanni Palmer, whose low cross was fired home by Tranter from the edge of the box after 29 minutes. Tranter had already had the ball in the net, only to be ruled offside, and Palmer twice ought really to have done better when set up first by Tranter and Jimmy Cox, and later by Cox alone, but on both occasions his shots were too close to near Pope in the Soham goal, who saved comfortably.

Pope also had to be alert to deny Cox, while at the other end Page made an excellent save from Toby Andrews after Danny Nesbitt's clearance lacked distance, and Page also saved well from Newman at close range. Soham hit the crossbar, and Danny Cossington put a powerful header just over the bar as both sides fashioned decent chances, and although there was only one goal in it at the break, it never looked like that would be the end of the scoring.

Three minutes after the break, Soham were level with a goal that the Romford back four will feel ought to have been prevented, as Newman deflected what seemed like an aimless forward pass past Page, and this after Boro could have doubled their lead in the very first minute of the half when Warren Kayembe saw his shot kicked wide by Pope.

Romford were back in front a minute before the hour mark, however when Danny Nesbitt stooped to head home a Reece Tranter free-kick that had been knocked back across goal.

Even better was to follow for Boro as Palmer made it 3-1 on 66 minutes. It looked at first as though he had over-run the ball as he chased a long through pass, but he managed to nudge it past Pope, before skipping round the keeper and smashing the ball home for his third goal of the season. Jimmy Cox and Soham's Lloyd Groves then went in the book after Groves had kicked out at Palmer, with the Soham man was perhaps lucky not to see a straight red, and even luckier not to pick up a second yellow when he later fouled Danny Nesbitt. Soham were, however reduced to ten men when Callum Russell was cautioned for a second time in the final minute.

Once again Romford showed that they can play attractive football and deliver an end product, if they can be as effective at stopping goals as they are at scoring them, they won't be bottom of the table for much longer.

Romford: Anthony Page, Charlie Little, Ben Turner, Danny Nesbitt, Inesh Sumithran, Danny Cossington, Malaki Toussaint, Reece Tranter (Theo Costa, 84m), Warren Kayembe, Jimmy Cox (Ethan Kessell, 84m), Giovanni Palmer (Nathan Joseph, 84m). Subs not used: Jack Riddell, Rashaad Ogun
