Thurlow Nunn Champs Are Up Next

For the second Saturday on the trot, Romford face new opposition as Histon come to The Arena, and like Whitehawk last week, our visitors have been something of a yo-yo club in recent years.

In 1999-2000 Histon won the Eastern Counties League and earned promotion to the Southern League Division One East. Four years later they were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division, which they promptly won and went up to Conference South, finishing fifth in their first season. The Conference South title was won the following year (2006-07) and the club then had four seasons in the Conference National.

In 2008, Histon hit the national headlines with FA Cup wins over two Football League sides, as they beat first Swindon Town in the First Round, and then Leeds United in the Second, before going out to Swansea City.

Four seasons at Step 1 came to an end in 2011, and three seasons later Histon were relegated from Conference North to the Southern League Premier Division. By 2017, they were back where they had been at the turn of the century, however promotion from the Thurlow Nunn League was attained at the end of last season as they won the championship with room to spare, finishing fourteen points ahead of runners-up Woodbridge Town.

So far this season, Histon have been a model of inconsistency, with four wins and four draws, including 4-1 wins over Dereham Town and Great Wakering Rovers, which have been balanced by defeats at the hands of Witham Town and AFC Sudbury by the same scoreline. Last Saturday they drew 0-0 at home with Corby Town in the FA Trophy, but went out of the competition in Wednesday night's replay. The score? You may not be surprised to learn that it was 4-1 to Corby Town.

After Wednesday's chastening home defeat at the hands of Grays Athletic, Romford are in urgent need of points to avoid being cast adrift at the wrong end of the table even so early in the season. Let's hope that our fortunes change for the better this weekend.
