Part 3: Buckhurst Hill

Boro will be entering new territory when they visit Buckhurst Hill this season, with the club from the Epping Forest area have been promoted to Step 5 for the first time in their short history. The club have made remarkable progress in recent years, and swept almost all before them last season in the Eastern Counties League Division One South before losing out on the title to Ipswich Wanderers.

Brief History:

Formed in 1985, Buckhurst Hill’s first venture into senior football came in 2004 when they joined the Hertfordshire Senior County League. In 2008, they switched to the Essex Olympian League, winning Division One in 2017 and gaining promotion to the Premier Division, which they won in 2018.

In 2021 the club joined the Eastern Counties League Division One South, from which they were promoted at the end of last season.

Previous Meetings:

Romford and Buckhurst Hill have yet to meet in a competitive fixture, or a friendly for that matter.

Last Season:

Buckhurst Hill finished second to Ipswich Wanderers in the Eastern Counties League Division One South with 98 points from their 38 games, scoring 144 just 29. In the eagerly awaited clash between themselves and the ultimate champions, a crowd of 978 crammed into the ground at Roding Lane to see Ipswich win 2-0, consigning Buckhurst Hill to the play-offs. After a Semi-Final win over Wivenhoe Town, Hill were beaten by Halstead Town in the Final, but their disappointment soon turned to joy as they were promoted anyway as one of the teams with the best Points Per Game tally after vacancies arose further up the pyramid.

Unsurprisingly, a Buckhurst Hill player was top of the scoring charts in the division as Nathan Sollosi scored 40, while his team-mate Suleyman Zuhdu netted 37. Sonny Shilling, who played for Boro during the 2017-18 season, weighed in with 18 goals, while another former Boro man, Reece Tranter, also turned out for Hill during last season.

In the FA Vase, Buckhurst Hill overcame Enfield, Newbury Forest, Great Yarmouth Town, and Gorleston before exiting in the 3rd Round at home to Wroxham. The club did not take part in the FA Cup last season.

Home Ground and How to Get There:

The club’s ground is in Roding Lane, Buckhurst Hill, IG9 6BJ and by car is just 25 minutes from Romford. By public transport, the nearest station is Buckhurst Hill on the Central Line, from where it is a walk of about 10 minutes.
