Waltham Abbey 3 (2)- (1) 1 ROMFORD Attendance 103 - Capershotts
It was another bitter defeat for Romford in a game where they were the better team for long periods.
Like the visitors, Abbey also came into this match after a run of defeats so Boro would have been hoping to take home a point or even three and for the opening twenty minutes they were very much on top and created a number of chances that sadly, they failed to take. The best of those came as early as the fourth minute as centre back and skipper Danny COSSINGTON got forward to join an attack and was put clear on goal by a superb through pass but he just could not get a foot on the ball with the goal gaping. More opportunities came but were not capitalised on before Romford were stunned as they conceded two goals in as many minutes. A corner was only half cleared, and when the ball was played back in Shad Ngandu reacted the quickest to knock it past the onrushing Rob BUDD and from the next Abbey attack a long ball found Ngandu in acres of space and he had plenty of time to notch his second.
The rest of the half was more even but eleven minutes before the break Romford did eventually get the goal that their earlier play had warranted. An inswinging Harry DALY free kick was headed back across goal by Max AUSTIN to Andrew TIRANHU whose own header hit the foot of the post and crept just over the line before being scooped out by the keeper, but luckily the linesman was perfectly positioned to signal the goal.
The second half started in much the same way as the first with Romford doing most of the attacking but once again they ware thwarted by a mixture of good Abbey defending, some indecisive finishing and nothing loose bouncing kindly for them in front of goal. They then received a blow when Kai HEATHER was given a slightly harsh yellow card for a routine foul and then moments later a second yellow and a red, when he reacted to some unnecessary retaliation by an Abbey man. All three of Paul Martin's substitutions were forwards as Boro still searched with growing desperation for the equaliser that would have been the least that they deserved but the contest was finally put to bed in the ninetieth minute by another sharp piece of finishing by Ngandu to complete his hat trick after the ball could not be cleared properly following a good save by Budd.
So Romford slipped back to the bottom of the table as they prepare for a tough midweek trip to Heybridge and the weekend visit of Barking.
