Potters Bar Town 2 (1) - (0) 1 ROMFORD Attendance 123 - Pakex Stadium
Romford were defeated at Potters Bar but deserved so much more after hitting the woodwork three times.
Paul Martin kept faith with the players who had recorded two successive cup victories and the team showed encouraging signs with a good attacking display, even though they eventually had to return pointless from Hertfordshire. The Boro started brightly and in the opening three minutes twice went close from two right wings crosses, firstly Carlos DJALO whipped a ball in that Sam MVEMBA was inches away from and then Ayo OLUKOGA sent in a ball that James ISHMAIL was unable to control and was gathered by the grateful keeper. Jonathan NZENGO and Harry DALY both fired off target from distance as Romford dominated the early exchanges before a flurry of goalbound efforts were all blocked by some heroic last ditch challenges from the Potter Bar defence.
At the other end Romford conceded an unnecessary corner and Hugo ATKINSON and Michael GOOCH had to combine to keep out a header at the far post in the twenty second minute, but just before the half hour Romford produced a quick counter attack with Ishmail shooting just wide. They were then hit with a sucker punch three minutes later, when Michael GOOCH had a shot easily covered but a wicked deflection diverted the ball to Eoin Casey to score the opening goal. Just before half time a Daly thunderbolt smashed against the post and and the ball rebounded to Olukoga who could only clip the opposite post with his shot whilst under heavy pressure and the ball went out of play for a goal kick.
The second half was very even as the midfields took over but a Mvemba miskicked cross was tipped onto the cross bar by the Potters Bar keeper as Romford’s bad luck continued. With their first chance of the second half Casey doubled the lead poking home a free kick to the far post in the fifty-ninth minute leaving Boro with a mountain to climb. They continued to push forward in a desperate effort to get back into the game and in the seventy-third minute a brilliant interception and run by Danny COSSINGTON gave Jonathan NZENGO the chance to smash the ball into the corner to reduce the deficit. Despite their best efforts Romford could not find a way through to earn a much needed point that was the least their performance deserved, and they remain at the foot of the table.
