ROMFORD 3 (2) - (0) 1 Witham Town Attendance 78 - Rookery Hill
By Gary Redwin
Romford secured a valuable win in their survival attempt against a poor Witham Town team.
The hosts, who had been playing well in recent games without getting much luck dominated against third from bottom Witham and moved within six points of them with four to play before the end of the season. After some early Witham possession George WOODWARD had a shot from distance saved and Ayo OLUKOGA was denied by an outstretched foot after beating his man and cutting in from the byline. Romford did finally open the scoring in the twentieth minute when a corner was only cleared to Philip Brown-Bampoe and although his shot was blocked, the ball ran kindly to Danny NESBITT who took a touch before firing low past the keeper.
Romford continued their dominance but did not create any more clear cut chances until four minutes before half time. Nathan JOSEPH cleared the ball to Joseph CHIDYAUSIKU who found Olukoga racing down the right wing and his pace was too much for the defender, allowing him to cut in towards goal before firing past Luca Collins and double the Boro's lead. Just before half time Chidyausiku hit a left footed shot from distance that whistled just past the far post with the keeper beaten.
In the second half Romford continued where they left off with Olukoga and Chidyausiku linking up again and the midfielder having his low shot tipped round the post with the keeper at full stretch. Olukoga who was everywhere had another effort saved, before Joseph had a shot blocked after wrong footing a defender with a good piece of skill. At the other end a Witham shot from distance took a huge deflection over Harry ALDRIDGE in the Boro goal but luckily smashed against the bar.
In the seventy-second minute the diving Aldridge did well to stop a Witham attack but his momentum took him out of the box and Johnny Ashman whipped the resulting free kick into the top corner to reduce the deficit. Moments later and Romford's good work seemed to be falling apart when Toby BARLOW was sent off after receiving his second yellow for kicking the ball away but soon after, George WOODWARD was left unmarked to head home a John MASKELL free kick and restore the two goal advantage. Despite having the extra man, Witham were unable to produce anything of any note before the end and Romford comfortably held on to climb off the bottom of the table.
